John attended Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra, CA. He started working at a young age in his father's machine shop. He then served in the Navy as a machinist. He spent a number of years driving trucks cross-country. Whenever he picked up a route headed West, he was sure to stock up on Mexican food supplies because Missouri (where he co-owned a farm with his friend Gaylan) didn't have what he needed to make a good burrito! After moving back to California, he owned a locksmith shop for a few years then returned to truck driving. He enjoyed driving because he didn't have someone over his shoulder all the time and could be his own person and just enjoy the work. He received the Million Mile Safety Award and he was rightfully proud of it!
When any of the grandkids needed help with Math, “Grandpa John” was like a human calculator and always willing to help.
