Nancy graduated from Shenandoah High School in Shenandoah, Iowa, and carried forward the steady spirit and warmth of her roots throughout her life. A beloved, kind-hearted presence, she had a gift for making people feel seen. She was someone who could talk to anyone, never met a stranger, and somehow made every conversation feel like a reunion.
Nancy retired from Smitty's Supermarket, where she worked as a sales clerk. Whether in everyday moments or life’s bigger seasons, she was known for showing up. Nancy was generous with her time, her attention, and her care. She was always there when she was needed.
On February 7, 1995, Nancy married James T Walter, and they shared their lives together until his passing in July of 2017. She was also preceded in death by her son, Lance Allen McConkey, and her parents, Jim and Ray Stoddard.
She is survived by her son, Heath Allen McConkey; her sister Norma Bishop and family; her sister PJ Whitehill and family; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also lovingly remembered by her granddaughters Alexia McConkey and Mackenzie Preciado (husband Jonathan), and by her great grandsons Waylon and Wyatt.
Nancy delighted in shopping, shopping, and more shopping! She had a special fondness for collecting anything flamingo. She loved to entertain and treasured time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, as well as with her sisters and their families. She also enjoyed Bingo and Bunco, bringing her signature energy and joy wherever she went.
Nancy was truly the life of the party, a bright spirit who lit up a room and made others feel welcome without hesitation or condition. No respecter of persons, simply openhearted and full of joy. Her legacy is one of giving, connection, and the kind of love that reaches out easily and stays with you.
