Paul and his twin Dale, were born to Bernice and William Wassmuth on December 10, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa. Paul learned to be a chef in high school and used that skill in the National Guard. Paul was a visionary, planner, and dreamer. He used his building skills and worked at United Airlines to achieve his dreams, provide for his family, and pursue his passion for hunting. Paul was an avid hunter and published a book of his many hunting trips. Paul went to work for United Airlines in Los Angeles, California and transferred with United to work in Denver, Colorado; Eugene, Oregon and Boise, Idaho. In 1970, Paul took over the United Airlines Catering Kitchens that provided meal service out of Spokane, Washington; Reno, Nevada, and Boise, Idaho. For the three consecutive years, Paul won the United Airlines Caterer of the Year Award. In 1988, Paul and Anita were married. 1996 they built a house in Emmett, Idaho before moving to Sun City in 2000. They were very active in their church, men’s and women’s groups. Paul used the skills he had learned in designing and building homes to build a kitchen facility for New Creations Women’s Shelter in Mexico.
Paul also solicited local businesses to provide playground equipment for the Esperanza Para Los Ninos orphanage in Rocky Point, Mexico. He designed additional wooden and steel playground equipment and recruited volunteers to go with him to get the playground completed. Paul also participated in other house building/remodeling mission trips. Paul took up jewelry making and lapidary while in Sun City. He made beautiful gold and silver jewelry from semi-precious stones. Many of Paul’s jewelry and rock items were in high demand and he enjoyed making personalized orders. Paul’s greatest lapidary achievements were a covered bridge and log cabin; both made entirely of polished stone. In his later years, one of Paul’s greatest joys was making Toys for God’s Kids, wooden cars that were donated and distributed to children around the world.
