Jack Joseph Nemeth, 75, of Cardington, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 29, 2025 in Yuma, Arizona. He was born in Marion, Ohio on May 4, 1950 to the late George Joseph and Pauline Bertha (Dashkovitz) Nemeth. He was the youngest of six children.
He started life with unique challenges that required many surgeries and stays at Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He had a lot of special memories being at Children’s, often recalling that he got to meet Hopalong Cassidy, the cowboy played by William Boyd; Rin-Tin-Tin the dog; and Flippo the Clown.
He attended school at both Saint Mary’s and Marion City. He also attended a semester of college at Delta College in Saginaw, Michigan, with an interest in Mechanical Drawing. He started working at age 15 as a bus boy at the Harding Hotel in Marion, and later would work at Tecumseh Products, alongside his dad and older brothers and enjoyed attending annual alumni picnics to visit with old friends and co-workers. He also drove a school bus for Marion City Schools and loved the students he picked up daily. In 1978, he moved to Saginaw County, Michigan and began working for General Motors, which aligned with his love of the automotive industry and being able to contribute. His last place of work was at Pioneer Sugar, where he became permanently disabled from an industrial accident in 1982.
Jack was married twice. His first marriage, in 1968, was to the mother of his two oldest children, Jack Daniel and George. His second marriage was to Nancy Cunningham in Marion, Ohio on May 4, 1974, and while they divorced after 25 years of marriage, they remained close friends over the years. She is the mother of his two youngest children, Annette and Nathan.
Jack is survived by his children, George Paul Nemeth of Levelland, Texas; Annette Kimberly Nemeth-Sauselen of Cardington, Ohio; and Nathan Joe Nemeth of Marion, Ohio. In addition, he is survived by four grandchildren: Christian Seth Nemeth (Janelle) of Amarillo, Texas, Madelin Brooke Nemeth of Amarillo; Aidyn Marie Nemeth and Raelynn Jane Nemeth, both of Marion. He is also survived by Nancy Susan Nemeth and daughters-in-law, Jennifer Nemeth of Amarillo and Sara Nemeth of Marion. Jack also had many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as all of his siblings: James Patrick, Evonne Helene, Gerald Earl, John Robert, and Elaine Ann. His son, Jack Daniel Nemeth, also preceded him in death in 2005, as well as a great grandson, Everett Kai, late last year, and a son-in law, Larry Sauselen.
It is very important that the world knows that on August 22, 2025, Jack celebrated 40 years of sobriety and was sober 14,617 days, 8 hours, and 16 minutes. He was dedicated to the 12-step community, not only to save his own sanity, but to help others in need. We have recently heard countless stories about how he was instrumental in the recovery of others, was a mentor, and a dear friend.
To have known Jack was to also love him, even though that could be challenging at times! It was possible, though, because he had incredible charm, he was funny, very street smart, mechanically inclined, creative artistically and through woodworking, and had a strong love for his family and friends. One of the things he consistently said and will stick with his family, is “have fun”. Thank you for teaching us how. We will miss our dad, our Grandpa Jack, our Uncle Jack, our dear cousin, and our friend.
Services for Jack will take place on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Saint Mary’s Church, 251 North Main Street, Marion, Ohio at 11:00 AM and burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery will immediately follow.
A separate memorial service will be held at a later date in Yuma, Arizona.
