I last saw Mel in San Diego about 10 years ago. I immediately recognized him with his warm smile he always had.

To Sandy, Scott, and the Barksdale family - I was so sorry to hear of Mel's passing. He was, and will remain in my memory as, one of my favorite people. When I was still living in Yuma, I used to travel to Phoenix just to get a haircut. Although Mel was indeed very talented and artistic, my reasons for doing so were because of his personality. Hair stylists, barbers, etc. are often thought of as a poor man's psychiatrist. But Mel was so much more - empathetic, comedic, and always capable of sending someone on their way feeling more positive than when they arrived. Come to think of it, Mel really wasn't a poor man's anything - he made my life richer having known him. My condolences to everyone who's life has been touched by Mel's passing.

Great friend, terrific hairstylist! You and your smile will be forever in my heart! You were real Mel, and that is why you and I got along so well, except for the other times! LOL!

I am deeply saddened by the news of Mel's passing and extend my deepest sympathy to his family. Mel and I shared much laughter years ago when we were both employed by Sugar. I worked in her fashion boutique and he was a hairdresser in her beauty salon. He brought a wonderful and unique style to the work place, and his smile & sense of humor will forever be remembered.
