Roger Timothy Lewis passed away on June 8, 2021, at the age of 79. He was born on April 22, 1942, in Talladega, Alabama, and later moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he lived until 1964. He was a member of the varsity basketball and track teams at South High School graduating in 1960. He attended the University of Tennessee earning his AB Degree in 1960 with a major in mathematics.
After working in the defense and space industry in Maryland and Florida, Roger returned to the University of Tennessee where he earned his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1972. For three years he was a member of the Department of Mathematics at Slippery Rock State College in Pennsylvania. In 1975, he joined the Department of Mathematics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) serving as a faculty member for 31 years and as department chair from 1984-1987 and 1997-2001. In 1995, he was awarded the UAB Caroline P. and Charles W. Ireland Award for Scholarly Distinction. From 2001-2003 he served as an Analysis Program Director in the Division of Mathematical Sciences at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Virginia.
Roger was a member of Independent Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama, where he sang in the choir under the direction of Joseph W. Schreiber for more than 20 years. More recently, he had the opportunity to sing with the National Cathedral Society in Washington, D.C. and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra Chorus, in Birmingham, Alabama.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents Guy Walter Lewis and Beuna Moody Lewis of Knoxville, Tennessee, and his brother Robert Walter Lewis of Avon Park, Florida. He is survived by his wife Barbara of Birmingham, Alabama; son David (Erin) of Miami, Florida; daughter Pamela Jeanne King of Birmingham, Alabama; granddaughter Angela Christine King of Odenville, Alabama; great granddaughter Nozomi-Dawn; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Independent Presbyterian Church Choir or the Roger T. Lewis Endowed Fund, Department of Mathematics, UAB.
A memorial service will be held at Independent Presbyterian Church, 3100 Highland Avenue, 35205, on Monday, June 14, at 12:00, with a reception following.
