Mildred Geraldine Gaurisco McGinnis, age 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 14, 2021 with her loving family by her side in her home after a long slide into the many physical breakdowns incumbent to human mortality.
She was predeceased by her parents, the late Vincent J. Guarisco and Mildred G. Schindeldecker Guarisco. Loving mother of Donald McGinnis, Jr., (Lanel B. Gioia), Michael McGinnis, Sr., and Ronald McGinnis, Sr. (Melissa). Grandmother of Rachael, Michael, Debbie, Ronnie, Amanda, Kylie, Kelly, great-grandmother of Kira, Brendyn, Jackson, Reagan, James, Jr., and Danielle and her sister Maryfrances G. Seals. She was the pillar of her extended family.
She was generous with her relative wealth to needy family members, often taking them into her home when they had nowhere else to go, loving them when few would, providing for their material needs, eventually getting some back on their feet again, and accepting others as her long term dependents. She was very strong in her love. But she saw herself as following in the steps of Christ by loving without limits, giving of what she had without thought for tomorrow, and accepting people as she found them.
All of the family could see her end coming, in all the ways we mortal beings endure when nature takes its course with us. But that long good-bye does not lessen the blow this loss brings, nor ease the grief that each one who loved her must now endure.
In time, it will be possible to tell each other the great family stories, to smile and laugh over old and well remembered joys. And there will be a lot of that to come because there was such a good life at the center of it.
But this is the time for those who can to cling hard to your loved ones and weep for your loss. Because of this pandemic we can’t all be physically together, but we certainly are in our shared grief, a grief that could not be so deep, were it not for the depth of love all who knew her will so miss.
Family and friends are invited to attend the Prayer Service at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, Louisiana on Friday, February 26, 2021 at 1:00 pm. Visitation will begin at 10:00 in the morning.
