Bill was married to Angelina Castellanos (deceased) from April 24, 1955 to August 16, 2003. They lived in the La Mesa area for the greater part of their 48 years of marriage. They purchased their first home in Vista La Mesa and lived there for eight years. As their family grew they purchased and moved to a larger home at 3855 Bass Street, La Mesa in 1967. Angie worked at Kress's Department Store in San Diego during the first five years of their marriage. She stopped working so that they could pursue and adopt the first of three children.
Bill attended La Mesa and Lemon Grove Elementary Schools: He graduated from Grossmont Union High School in June of 1950. He attended San Diego Evening Adult School, completing ten courses in Landscape Maintenance and Plant Identification. Bill then went on to attend San Diego Mesa College for his A.S. Degree in Nursery, Landscape Technology and graduated in 1976. His next educational classes were at San Diego City College, where he completed 24 units in Professional Housekeeping Management. Bill's last educational class was at National University where he completed one course in Contract Compliance.
As a result of adopting their three children, the San Diego County Welfare Department named Bill the County Adoptive Father of the Year for 1965. Their family was honored by the County Board Supervisors and they appeared on the Bob Mills Morning Show on Channel 8.
Bill worked for the County of San Diego for 32 years,1952-1984. Bill started as a light-duty laborer in gardening and retired as a Gardening Superintendent. Also, from 1980-1984, he took responsibility of managing a contract monitoring unit, which monitored custodial, solid waste, tree trimming, gardening and dead animal removal contract services. Bill designed the landscaping for 21 County Facilities. The largest facility was The Vista Regional Center with over 350,000 square feet of planting area. The smallest facility was The Imperial Beach Library with about 2000 square feet of planted area.
Bill then worked for San Diego Mesa College from 1984-1996 and retired as a Grounds Supervisor Il.
Bill was a 26 year Member and Past President of The Lemon Grove Sportsmen Golf Club.
The Lemon Grove Men's Social Club: Member for 4 years and President for 3 years.
And The Southern California Turf Grass Council - San Diego Chapter: Member for over 10 years and Board Member for 2 years.
Bill is survived by Daughter, Tina (Alan) Goodrich and Lisa (Raymond) Abeyta; Son, William Oyos; Grandchildren, Matthew, Christina, Keegan and Ava.
A visitation will be held Monday, March 15, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Erickson-Anderson Mortuary, 8390 Allison Ave., La Mesa. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at 11:00 AM in Saint John of the Cross Catholic Church, 8086 Broadway, Lemon Grove. A committal service will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 4470 Hilltop Dr., San Diego.
