Sonya Harriet Schickler Hebrew name Chanah. Passed away peacefully at 2:50 p.m. Friday in her Brookline home surrounded by loved ones. Sonya was born on October 1, 1935 in Boston. She was the Valedictorian at Hebrew College and received a double promotion for her outstanding and studious work in the classroom. Following her degree, she had a storied career teaching Hebrew, starting at Beth El Hebrew School, which was at the time in Dorchester. After teaching at Beth El, she taught at Temple Emanuel and Temple Reyim, both of Newton and Temple Mishkan Tefila, which was at the time in Chestnut Hill. Following her career in the Hebrew classroom, Sonya taught Hebrew at home to many private students who loved her as a teacher and person. When Sonya wasn't teaching Hebrew, she enjoyed going to synagogue; the last two she attended were Young Israel and Kehillath Israel, both in Brookline. At home, she watched Israel TV regularly and especially loved the humorous shows, like Eretz Nehederet. With her love of humor, it’s only fitting that Sonya had a sharp wit and made people laugh with her jovial spirit. In addition to Israel TV, she liked watching local TV for the weather reports and loved some of the sitcoms on the major network as well. Sonya leaves behind her two sons Eliot Schickler of Brookline and Eric Schickler and his wife Terri Bimes of Berkeley, of California and their two kids Sam and Lea.
