He spent his career working for the State of Michigan as an unemployment benefits claims examiner. Darrell was looking forward to his retirement at the end of 2021.
To say Darrell was a sports fan was an understatement. When he wasn’t on the golf course aiming for a hole-in-one, Darrell was rooting for his teams. From U of M football to the Detroit Lions and Tigers, he loved the Michigan Teams in Blue. Darrell was a member of the American Legion Hall for 37 years. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved watching the birds and sharing his knowledge of birds with everyone. He was a beloved friend, loving son, father, grandfather, and dedicated and loving husband of 24 years.
Darrell is survived by his wife of 24 years, Pamela, his children: Carrie Butkin, Kristi Butkin, Brett (Stephanie) Pierce, Brent (Michelle) Pierce and Lisa (Timothy) Kurzhals; his father Robert Butkin; his grandchildren: Antonio Rodriguez, Collin, Johnathan and Jackson Pierce, Ashley Pierce, Michael and Gabrielle Morales, Breanna and Kaila Kurzhals, and Daylore (Nathan) Howard; his great-granddaughter Lilia; his brothers: Robert (Kim) Butkin, Bill (Margaret) Butkin, Brian (Cathy) Butkin; and his favorite aunt Dee and Aunt Monica, and dear friend Fran, as well as many other relatives.
Darrell was preceded in death by his mother, Myrtle (Marlene) Butkin, his sister Bridgette and his grandson Chase Pierce.
Visitation for Darrell will be held on Saturday October 16, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Reyers North Valley Chapel located at 2815 Fuller Avenue NE Grand Rapids MI 49505. A funeral service will be held immediately following at 12:00 noon. There will be a luncheon held at 1:30 at American Legion Hall Post 47 located at 3811 W River Drive Comstock Park MI 49321.
Memorial donations in memory of Darrell may be made to the American Legion Post 47.
