Steve came into this world in March 1957 at Ft. Knox, Kentucky (guess that made him the “Golden Child”) and he decided to leave in May 2020 at the age of 45. Yes, 45. He was always telling us he was born in 1975. This way it made him younger! Either way, a life too short.
He was welcomed into the Light by the love of his life, Debra Williams Staples; his Daddy, David Staples; his parents-in-law, Harold and Mary Williams; his maternal Granddaddy and Gradmomma, Clarence (Shorty) and Cora Mae Burton; his paternal Papaw and Mamaw, Alton and Margaret Staples; his Uncle Ray and Aunt Mary Burton; his Aunt Billie (Mildred) and Uncle Bobby Molsbee; his Aunt Evelyn Burton Delk; his Aunt Kakee (Kathryn) and Uncle Dick Payne; and his Uncle Wendell and Aunt Ruby Burton.
To celebrate his life and to mourn his loss, he leaves his favorite older daughter and her husband, Jennifer and Jerry Strickland, and grandson, Caleb Strickland; his favorite son, Christopher Staples, and granddaughter, Naveah Staples; his favorite child and her husband, Nicole and JR Garcia, and grandchildren, Tristan Reed and his wife Alesia, Jordan Garcia and Papi (Elias) Garcia, and great-grandchildren, Hayley Reed and Ella and Jensen Reed; his mother, Dottie (Dorothy) Roebuck; his brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Jeanne Johnson, his nephew and his family, Rich, Julie, Rowan and Isla Johnson, his niece and her family, Beth, Andy, Logan and Keegan Hice, and his nephew, Michael Johnson; his brother, Kirby Staples; his favorite sister, Debbie (Deborah) Staples, his brother-in-law, Ricky and Randy Williams; and a host of cousins and friends (you all know who you are!).
Steve lived his life on his own terms, sometimes to the consternation of those closest to him (and we all know who you are!). He was an avid Dallas Cowboys and Arkansas Razorback fan. He was a rebel-rouser of sorts, until “Steve’s Debbie” came into his life. After that, he settled into the role of husband and father of three “adorable” children. Tragically, Debbie left this life far too early. Alone with three young children to raise, he did the best he could. While his children were growing up and after they were grown, he worked for the City of Shreveport, Dart Industries and Kelly’s Truck Stop. After his health took a turn, he became a nanny for his grandchildren, who he doted upon and was extremely proud of, and a live-in companion for his mother, maintaining her home and her property. Unfortunately, in April 2016, his activates were curtailed by a stroke. He lived the last four years of his life in a nursing home, where he became known for his generosity with his things (!) and for his funny side, droll though it might have been.
We would like to thank all who came to visit him while he was in the nursing home. These visits really meant more to him than you know. He was happy to see you come and it made him sad when you left, except maybe his sister and daughter. We would also like to thank the nurses and staff, who truly cared for him. Special thanks to Carrollyn, his other supplier! (Inside joke!).
Join his family to celebrate his life at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home on Mansfield Road, Shreveport. His ashes will be interred in his wife’s gravesite, immediately afterward.
The one and only pallbearer will be his cousin, Carrollyn Petrosh (Urns are not that big). Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Johnson, Debbie Staples, Chris Staples, Caleb Strickland, Tristan Reed, Papi Garcia, Ricky Williams and Randy Williams.
In lieu of flowers, please help someone in need or plant a tree.
