Lawrence George Imhof, 91, died peacefully at Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville, NC on November 12, 2020. A smart, gentle man with a sweet nature, Larry greeted everyone with an infectious smile. Larry loved life and always lent a patient ear to friends and family, willing to offer sound advice.
Larry was born and raised in Staten Island, New York, where he was the Salutatorian at New Dorp High School. He then moved to Westfield, NJ with his parents, enjoying travelling the U.S. and playing tennis at the Westfield Tennis Club in his free time.
He graduated from Haverford College in 1950 with a B.A. in Chemistry, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh in 1954, and was elected to Sigma Xi for the encouragement of research in science. He was a project scientist in the research and development laboratories of Union Carbide Corp in Bound Brook, NJ, where he held many patents in plastics. He later followed his passion for the stock market, pivoting to a career as a Senior Account Executive with Merrill Lynch in Somerville, NJ, before retiring in 1984.
He lived in Green Brook, NJ with his beloved wife of 32 years, Mary Ellen, and daughter Kathleen. He was a parishioner of St. Mary’s-Stony Hill Roman Catholic Church in Watchung. Predeceased by Mary Ellen in 2001, Larry moved to Charlotte in 2012 to live with Kathleen and her family. He was a devoted father and grandfather who cherished time with his family, attending all school and sports activities for his two grandchildren. Larry moved to Elmcroft Senior Living in July 2019 and to Sunrise Senior Living in February 2020. Left to cherish many wonderful memories are his only child Kathy Imhof Coleman, son-in-law Tom Coleman, granddaughter Kaitlin and grandson John.
A funeral service in memory of Larry will be held at a later date at St. Gabriel Catholic Church.
