He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Virginia, of 67 years, his Children Greg (Janice) and Silvana; and grandchildren Matthew (Cassandra) and Nicholas (Helen). He will be fondly remembered by his brothers Franco (Cristina), Mario (Carolina) and Lorenzo. In-laws; Diane Pallone, Loretta (Giuliano) Scarpino, Marina Di Nella and Ralph Aiello. His nieces and nephews will remember Uncle Gus as a gentle and quiet observer at our large and boisterous family gatherings. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Gregorio and Rosa, brother Tony; In-laws, Tony and Maria Masi; and In-laws, Fiorina Aiello and Gabriele Di Nella.
Dad was born in small town, Miglierina, in southern Italy. He married Mom from the neighboring village of Amato and immigrated to Canada in the winter of 1953 as newlyweds. They quickly adapted to a new climate, language, and culture with the promise of a better future for themselves and the family they hoped to have in Canada.
Although he wasn’t a trained engineer or carpenter, he managed to design and build our family cottage at Beaconia, on Lake Winnipeg. He was a do-it-yourselfer, who would study a difficult problem until he came up with the solution and then built it. He could also fix anything – even if it wasn’t an elegant fix. He enjoyed the time spent with family and friends at the cottage but was also fine working independently on a project or just being alone with his thoughts.
Dad retired from Labatt’s at the age of 62 after almost 30 years with the company. He accomplished his goal to support his family and encourage his children to pursue higher education and whatever career interested us. As empty nesters, they enjoyed travelling to places where there might be something interesting to experience or to learn. Dad always had an interest in science and how the world worked, and this curiosity is something we will all remember fondly.
A private mass will be live streamed and can be viewed via YouTube @ Holy Rosary Church Winnipeg live stream: Tuesday, November 24, 11:00 am. Followed by private entombment at Waverley Memorial Gardens.
