Murray was born in San Diego, CA, on March 15, 1951, the son of the late Martin Greenlee Gipe, Sr. and the late Vera Mildred Gipe (Crowe). He is preceded in death by his wife, Laura Leigh, his older brother, Martin G. Gipe, Jr. and his loving Pug, Rudy.
Murray is survived by his children, Kristin Sullivan, Jessica Spalding (Michael), Cara Sullivan (Shawn) and Jacob Murray, as well as his brother, Michael O. Gipe (Helen). He is also survived by his grandchildren Elijah, Aliya, David, Trent, Kyleigh and Kiersten. He is also survived by his faithful companion, Hank the Pug.
Murray graduated from St. Andrews High School and the Baptist College of Charleston, SC (now Charleston Southern University). He later obtained his Master Degree and became a CPA. He worked for Public Savings in Charleston for many years, prior to moving to Louisville in the early 1990’s, where he went to work for Capital Holdings Insurance Company. He later he went to work for Humana, from which he retired.
As a teenager, he was a singer and played guitar in the band called the Jaguars. He was an active member of the Jaycees. Murray loved to hunt and fish. He loved boating and being on the water. Another one of his favorite hobbies was cooking – BBQ, wings, ribs – anything that could be grilled.
Murray was a true southern gentleman. He was honest, generous, and a man of his word. He loved his children and grandchildren with all his heart and made sure to show them everyday. He loved Louisville, but his heart always remained in Charleston.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, in the chapel of Arch L. Heady & Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Road, Louisville, KY 40222. Guests are invited to attend a visitation from 2-8 pm on Tuesday, January 12, 2021.
