Ed was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 8, 1927 to Edward and Erna Rose, in the apartment behind their deli. A little over a year later, his brother, Alfred followed. They grew up in the deli business, first in Brooklyn, then in the West Hempstead area of Long Island. They attended Trinity Lutheran Church, where he met the love of his life, Doris Hansen.
After a year of service in The Army of the United States, Ed finished his degree in agriculture at Farmingdale College. Ed and Doris were married at Trinity on April 10, 1948. They lived In West Hempstead until 1963 when Ed joined his Uncle Willie and partner in Winther’s Deli in Haverstraw, NY. In 1972, Ed purchased his last business, John’s Deli in Washingtonville, NY, and the family moved to Campbell Hall. He ended his career as a warehouse worker for Wakefern in 1991. After retirement he enjoyed traveling with his 2nd wife, Edna, and doing many creative activities; painting, wood carving, carpentry, and gardening being among his favorites. He was also an avid hunter and spent many happy hours at his cabin with family and friends.
He leaves behind his brother Alfred, son Bob and his wife Pat, daughter Kathy, son Richard and his wife Darcy, James and his wife Julie, and William and his wife Jennifer. There were 14 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren who loved him dearly. He is predeceased by his parents, his wife Doris, wife Edna, grandson, Edward Hooper and son-in-law John D. Hooper.
He will also be greatly missed by his step children Chris Salisbury, Beth Peters and husband Jesus Martin, and David Peters and wife Donna. He was “Uncle Eddie” to Suzanne, David and Isa.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 16, 2021 from 1-4pm and 6-8pm at the David T. Ferguson Funeral Home, 20, North St., Washingtonville, NY. Cremation Services will be Private.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions in his name can be made to Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, Newburgh, NY or to Hudson Valley Honor Flight, Walden, NY.
