Marion R. Gibbs, formerly of San Angelo, TX, passed away on January 1, 2018 at Brookdale Round Rock Assisted Living in Austin, TX, at the age of 91. He was born on December 11, 1926 in Burkburnett, TX to parents, Newton M. and Nora A. Gibbs. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Marion joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served in the South Pacific for the duration of WWII. He married Jennie Lou Guthrie on December 18, 1946, in First Baptist Church, Sundown, TX. They were married for 70 years. Marion was a committed Christian and member of First Baptist Church San Angelo. He was a devoted husband, wonderful father, grandfather, uncle and faithful friend to many. He worked in the oil fields of West Texas, The South Plains and Panhandle his adult life. Upon retirement he moved to San Angelo where he refined his artistic skills through woodworking and painting. He loved going to the Chicken Farm Art Center every month “to harass the artists” as he would say. He also loved to fly fish, play 42 dominos and golf. Marion always had a smile on his face and his positive spirit was evident to all who knew him. He never met a stranger. Marion is survived by his son, Russ Gibbs and wife, Vicki of Kingwood, TX; nephew, Allen Guthrie and wife, Rita of Round Rock, TX; niece, Janice Neithercutt of Davis, CA; nephew Ron Guthrie, Las Vegas, NV; niece, Kendra Williams Harris of Mineola, TX; nephew, Sam Williams of Grapevine, TX; niece Wanda Kirby of Moab, UT; niece Lynda Sorensen of Moab, UT; and other extended family. Marion was preceded in death by his wife Jennie Gibbs in 2017; his grandson Ryan Gibbs in 2012; brother Malcom Gibbs in 1951; sister Jean Williams in 2013; niece Janell Moncrief in 2013; niece Kelley Williams in 1984; and niece Kari Kim Kerby in 1974. A graveside burial service led by his son, Dr. Russell Gibbs, will be held at 5:00 PM on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at the City of Levelland Cemetery. Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville TX and George Price Funeral Home in Levelland TX are in direction of arrangements.
