Eugenia Rosita Claxton was born on January 5, 1936 in Limon, Costa Rica. She was the daughter of the late Daniel Thomas and Irene Thompson Thomas. Eugenia worked diligently to help migrate her husband, then her children to the U.S. in 1967. She and her husband Joseph N. Claxton eventually settled in Brooklyn, NY where they raised their children.
Eugenia was a certified nurse’s assistant. She was employed at Marcus Garvey Nursing Home. She loved caring for and helping people. Her friends at work nicknamed her “Clacky”. She loved and was very much loved by the friends she made there; some even became permanent additions to our family. She retired from Marcus Garvey after 26 years.
Eugenia was a loving and dedicated mother. She nurtured and supported her entire family and worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for their advancements. Eugenia was devoted to her community, feeding the children and anyone in need, and sharing her kind spirit and the word of God. Her home was always open to family members, friends, and those with nowhere else to turn. Eugenia was such a loving and warm person, she would make friends young and old, everywhere she went. She had a passion for cooking and baking, and anyone who knew her, knew that she showed her love through a good home cooked meal.
Eugenia gave of herself without measure, often putting the needs and even wants of others before her own. She gave meaning to the words in the Bible, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves”. (Philippians 2:3). Eugenia had a wonderful sense of humor and always had an endearing and kind word to share. She tended to choose her words carefully and often would advise us to “Go to God for knowledge, wisdom, and understanding”.
She enjoyed spending time with all of her family and friends, but took great joy in spending time with her many grand and great-grandchildren. She loved and cared for them.
Eugenia, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 17, 2020 surrounded by her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Dale Claxton; her granddaughter, Sonia Katrina Claxton; her brother, Alberto Thompson and her niece, Joann Thompson.
Eugenia is survived by 5 children, Federico Thompson and spouse Julieta Williams, Carlos Claxton, Amorzel and spouse Raul Acosta, Valeria Williams, Vernon Claxton and spouse Janic Claxton; 18 grandchildren, Michael, Tonia-Gicelle, Jeffery, April, Jennifer, Joanna, Celeste, Barbara, Bruce, Amara, Anthony, Sharrise, Teven, Trenton, Jerome, Gabriel, Jasmine, and Daniela; plus 25+ great-grandchildren.
