Our sunshine is missing a ray of light, and numerous Odessa stores, along with QVC, lost one of their best customers on December 23, 2020. Margaret Mourning Abbott, of Odessa, Texas, died at the age of 73 after battling a courageous six-year battle against Leukemia.
The bluest eyes in Texas have dimmed. Margaret enjoyed shopping, but she mostly enjoyed giving to others. She loved to surprise others with thoughtful gifts and was always considerate to those in need of support or cheering up. Her love of children, whether her own or someone else’s, could not be topped. No child was beyond her reach. A troubled child became loved when near her, and to that child, she was unforgettable. For over forty years she received Christmas cards from the children in her past.
Her undying faith and belief in our Lord Jesus Christ gave Margaret the strength to carry on and fight a courageous battle with cancer. Husband, daughters, family, and friends supported her through this time, and all she asked was that prayers keep coming. That constant love of God made life wonderful, and she was sure to share it with everyone in her path.
Margaret also loved Britain’s royal family. Her English heritage was strong. She showed her true love of British culture through her collection of memorabilia, from prince and princess dolls and articles, to the cherished memories of watching majestic weddings in the middle of the night while on the phone with her English-born mother.
She was kind, with a generous heart, and her sense of humor made everyone laugh. Her enthusiasm sparkled in everything she did. A heart, bigger than Texas, and a smile as big as Dallas her presence was felt by everyone. She was always giving and considerate. Friends described her as funny and charming in the same sentence. Her beauty not only shined on the outside but glowed from the inside. She welcomed in strays. She would love them until it felt safe for them to journey back into the wild on their own or keep them for a while and protect them from danger.
Born to the late Del Mourning and Helen Freeman, January 24, 1947, in Enid, Oklahoma. Margaret devoted her life to raising four perfect daughters. In her eyes, Debbie, Judy, Brenda, and Susie, were her world, second to no one. When asked about her many careers, she proudly announced her job titles: Domestic Engineer, Peace-Keeper, Accountant, Teacher, Seamstress, Chef, Maid, Mom, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and so many more. She was everything for everyone.
She married Donald Worth Abbott, and they lived happily in Odessa, Texas. Margaret is survived by four daughters and one stepson: Debra Hardaway and husband Jeffrey of Houston, Texas; Pastor Judith Swarts and husband Richard of Menard, Texas; Brenda Brown Matson, of Round Rock, Texas; and Susan Norman and husband, Brett, of Round Rock, Texas; Donnie Abbott and wife, Rosemary; She is survived by six grandchildren: Phillip and Joshua Hardaway; Samantha Swarts; Christopher and Jason Goocher; and Parker Norman. She is survived by six great-grandchildren: Zipporah, Breanna, Riley, Everett, Jordan, and Brody. She is also survived by Brother, Richard and Pam Mourning, of Plano; Brother, Del and Sherry Mourning; and extended Sisters, Cindy Kimberling, and the late Sue Stogsdill.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at 3:30 PM at Levelland City Cemetery.
