November 21, 1930 – December 19th, 2020
Chris “Bob” Varela, age 90, passed away on Saturday, December 19th after a hard-fought battle with COVID-19. Chris was born in Sierra Madre to parents Vicente and Calletana (Montez) Varela. One of nine children, Chris was raised in Southern California before joining the U.S. Navy in his early adult years. After serving his country, Chris worked as an Optician until his retirement. Chris loved to travel to Mulege, BC Mexico. He enjoyed fishing the waters of Baja and soaking up the sun on the beach. Taking trips and spending time with loved ones was an important part of Chris’ life. In his later years, he enjoyed painting beautiful landscape portraits when he wasn’t being the life of the party in his retirement home.
Chris was preceded in death by both of his parents; brothers Manuel (Millie), Artie (Jeri), and David (Gino) Varela, in addition to his sisters Mary (Dean) Thomas and Dora (Gene) Parks. Chris is now reunited with his partner of 50 years, Lee Smith, who passed away in November 2006. Chris is survived by his sisters Josie (Dell) Fahrney, Terry (Jim) Newby, and brother Henry (Connie) Varela, along with his many nieces and nephews. Chris carried with him an infectious sense of lighthearted fun that will be deeply missed by all. He was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, who will forever remain in our hearts.
Plans for a military internment will be planned at a later date and per his wishes he will
return to Mulege.
Rest in Peace Bob
