Eve was born on October 28, 1933 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. Her father Walter was the son of Polish immigrants and her mother Florence was born in England and came to America as a small child. As an only child, Eve was doted on by her parents who encouraged her to study art. Eve became a very talented artist, and in 1955 she graduated from Carnegie Technical College (Carnegie-Mellon) with a bachelor’s degree in Art. After graduation she left Pittsburgh and moved to Cleveland, Ohio to work at American Greetings as a Greeting Card designer. It was here in Cleveland that she met and fell in love with the love of her life, Donald Higgins. Eve left her career as an artist to be a wife and mother and spent the next part of her life raising her 3 children; Stephen, Kathleen and Christine.
Eve was an avid reader with murder mysteries being her favorite genre. She was an intrepid traveler and visited places all over the world. Some of her favorite trips were to the national parks and Alaska (her all-time favorite). Other destinations include England, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Costa Rica and Panama. She was always looking forward to her next trip.
Of course everyone who knew Eve knows that her big passion in life was animals and her volunteer work at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Eve spent over 30 years volunteering as a docent at the zoo. She loved learning about and working with animals. She was always full of facts about animals and had many terrible animal jokes to tell - "Why are seagulls called seagulls? Because if they flew over the bay, they'd be called bagels!" She especially loved all the wonderful friends that she made at the zoo. She had a special place in her heart for the animals that she worked with, including Hootie the Owl and Rose the Hedge Hog. If you spent time at the zoo, you could often find her volunteering near her favorite animals, the elephants and orangutans.
Eve enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and will be dearly missed by all.
Eve is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Higgins. Eve is survived by her son Stephen Higgins of Cleveland, Ohio, and her daughters Kathleen Higgins of St. Louis, MO, and Christine Higgins Smith (Thomas) of Fairview Park, and grandchildren Kenneth Higgins, Amanda Smith and Andrew Smith.
Visitation will be held at Corrigan Craciun Funeral Home at 20820 Lorain Road in Fairview Park, OH on Friday, May 21, 2021 from 4PM-8PM. Committal services at Holy Cross Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
