94th birthday on May 17, 2021
Eunice was born in Concord, North Carolina; survived by her brother, J.W. Cochran Jr.
Her husband of 48 years, Joseph Mattera Sr. preceded her in death. Together, they
raised five children: Gloria (Joe), Joseph Jr. (Cathy), Rosemary (Mo), Teresa (David),
Anthony, eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and two great-greatgrandchildren.
Also surviving her are numerous nieces and nephews on both coasts.
Eunice was a local icon known around the village for her warm, loving (Cochran) smile.
She loved to walk, especially the Ocean Coast Walk around La Jolla. She raised her
family with a joy-filled, spiritual heart at Mary Star of The Sea Catholic Church and Stella
Maris Academy.
Eunice loved painting, knitting, arts and crafts. She loved dancing and even met her
husband at USO dance night, where she taught dance. She was such a happy soul.
She never lost her "southern accent," and people often asked where she grew up. She
enjoyed traveling, especially to North Carolina and Maui. She loved working at Harvest
Ranch Market and Jonathan's with her sister-in-law, Paula Mattera, making enchiladas
and where they gained a reputation as the "Enchilada Sisters."
Instead of flowers, we ask you to donate to your favorite charity in her memory.
Keep Dancing, Mom!
