A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at 10:30 am at Centenary United Methodist Church, 1290 College Street, Macon, GA. The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the Round Room at the church. Beth Dunwody and Reverend Sara Pugh Montgomery will officiate.
Fred Moody was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who possessed both wit and wisdom. He was, in the words of his son, “a really good guy.” Fred’s goodness was not always apparent, and his humility never required acclaim. He was a man who devoted endless hours to visiting sick friends at their bedside, anonymously providing help for those in need, and tirelessly serving friends, family, and strangers. To those who knew and love him, there was never a task too great or an order too tall to ask “Granddaddy” to help. And to strangers -- whether it be the person standing in the rain for whom he kept a supply of umbrellas, or the person whose grocery cart he offered to return in the parking lot – his generosity was subtle but always present. Fred was a man whose actions spoke louder than his words, and he lived by example. Sober for 36 years, he was also a mentor for many in the recovery community.
Fred was a graduate of Mercer University and worked for 42 years for Georgia Power Company as an engineer until his retirement in 2009. He had many colorful stories about working, side by side with his co-workers, amid torrential storms on 24-hour-call in order to preserve power for those of us nestled safely in our homes.
And when it came time to retire, Fred fully embraced “river life” with his family, especially his sons and his five grandchildren. His appreciation for nature and its creatures grew exponentially over time, evolving from a passion for hunting into a fascination with and desire to care for the hummingbirds and many other creatures that inhabited his home by the river. Fred offered an endless supply of treats and attention to his “granddogs,” the neighbors’ dogs, stray cats, and any other animals that might wander into his path.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Gerry Green Moody; his two sons, Eric Moody (Rebecca) of Smarr, and Hugh Tyler Moody (Tiffani) of Atlanta; and five grandchildren: Sadie Moody of Atlanta; PFC Hugh Moody, stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; and Elliott Moody, Tess Moody and Ben Moody, all of Atlanta. Fred was an only child and was predeceased by his parents, Fredrick Emil Moody, Sr. and Omajean Jordan Moody.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Fred can be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, where he served faithfully in many leadership roles over the years.
