Rhoda married her second husband Elmer Schultz. He died before their child James was born in 1926. To make a living Rhoda was a midwife and did catering for weddings and parties. Rhoda’s mother Lillie Rothrock asked all of them to move to her farm. Marjorie thought this was the best life ever living with grandma. When Marjorie was 13 her mother married John Fahring. He had an infant son, Jerry, because his wife had died at child birth.Marjorie graduated from high school and she worked at different farms and also did some grade school teaching.
Marjorie met Grant Lindstrom. He was the brother of a neighboring farmer. They were married in 1943. There was a 21 year difference in their ages. They moved to Arizona where Grant had an auto mechanic business. Marjorie became pregnant and also homesick so they moved back to Kansas. Their only child, Carlene, was born in Salina KS in 1946.
Grant had a terrible skin condition and the doctor told him he was allergic to grease and he had to quit the auto mechanic business. So he went to school and learned appliance repair. Later he learned he was not allergic to grease but Tide Detergent that Marjorie used to wash clothes.
It was hard to make a living in Kansas and in 1956, Ellen Mulnix, Grant’s sister, invited the family to move to Aurora, Colorado. Marjorie had always wanted to live in Colorado when her family went on a vacation to Denver in the 1930s. So with a small trailer they moved to Ellen’s. Grant had poor health and had problems finding a job. Marjorie got a job at Presbyterian Hospital on Grasshopper Hill in Denver. She liked that it was on the bus line.
They bought a new house in Commerce City, CO and Marjorie lived there 58 years. Grant died in 1976. After a few years she asked Carlene to move back home. She didn’t like living alone.Marjorie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Commerce City and had many friends.
