Michael L. Covert passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family at home in Coppell, Texas on May 29, 2020 at age 75. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Linda (neé Westfall), his beloved sons James (Anna Ostoja-Starzewska) of New York City, Jonathan Matthew of Coppell, daughter Erin (Wouter Hogers) of Washington, D.C., and grandson Adam of New York City. Michael was born May 16, 1945 in Meridian, Miss., the fourth of nine children of Benjamin Whitworth Covert and Lena Smith Covert. He moved to Dallas in 1966, where he met and married Linda in 1967. Within a few years, he found his passion in the nursery and landscaping business. A Texas Certified Nursery Professional, Michael made Dallas neighborhoods more colorful and beautiful until his retirement. He was a skillful man who made everyone he met laugh and feel loved. He never met a stranger, and he was still joking and making new friends in his final days. His phenomenal Southern cooking and Thanksgiving dressing will never be forgotten. He also loved Cadillacs, Elvis Presley, and banana pudding. Michael was devoted to his children, handing down to all of them a lifelong love of music and memories of his beautiful, strong singing voice. He was very close to his siblings and their families, who affectionately knew him as "Uncle Mike." His surviving siblings are Fred, Joseph, Albert, and Rita Janis. His predeceased siblings were Benjamin Whitworth Jr., Mary Grace, William, and Larry. A private memorial service will be held at Rolling Oaks Memorial Center in Coppell at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 14. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation.
