He was born in Fort Meade, Florida on March 6, 1942, but when he was a small child, the family moved to Pensacola, Florida, where he graduated from Pensacola Technical High School, worked at Carver Drugs, and met the love of his life at age 18 and married at 21. He was a vivacious spirit who had many interests and occupations, but above all, he was devoted to his family and a true friend to anyone lucky enough to befriend him.
He was skilled at many things and could fix just about anything around the house. He was a trained electrician and learned to work sheet metal while in high school. However, his true calling was working with people and he was a consummate salesman and never missed an opportunity to promote the products and services of the companies he worked for. In 1975, Larry moved his family to Georgia and eventually settled in Macon, where he retired after 25 years from Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company and worked for Hav-A-Tampa Cigar Company and Phillip Morris selling other tobacco products after “officially” retiring. He served his country for eight years both on active duty and as an Army reservist during the Vietnam War. He loved this country and the principles it stood for.
His passion was automobiles and he never missed an opportunity to visit a car lot for a quick peek at the newest models. However, his favorite car was the 1957 Chevrolet Belair that he purchased in 1962 and kept until the end. He was also an avid college football fan and spent many a Saturday in Athens, Georgia cheering on his beloved Georgia Bulldogs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Fulton and Johnnie Lois (Jackson) Owens; and his sister Marcia Lynn (Owens) Sorrels. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Ginger Shira Owens, his two children, Larry Scott (Christine) Owens and Heather Marie (Christopher) Woodgeard, three granddaughters, Anna Elizabeth Woodgeard, Evee Greer Owens, and Olivia Marie Woodgeard, and his brother, Robert W. Owens. Additionally, he is survived by many dear cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews, who he loved very much and was always happy to see.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 16, 2020 at Bayview Memorial Park, Pensacola, Florida. Pallbearers will be Scott Owens, Chris Woodgeard, Ryan Jones, and Dale Futral.
Family and friends are invited for a drop-in lunch (outside for social distancing) from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 1109 East La Rua Street, Pensacola, Florida 32501.
