Donald was born in New Haven, CT, the child of joseph and Lillian Leroux. He grew up in New Haven and was a graduate of Wilbur Cross High School. He was a Vietnam veteran and proudly served his country from 1961 until 1967 as a medic in the United States Army. In 1982 Donald met the love of his life Donna.
