Loving husband and devoted father, Hilton passed away peacefully on July 22, 2021.
Born and raised in Sampson County, North Carolina, Hilton was the youngest of four children to Isabell and Marshall Thomas “Tom” Newman. Growing up on the family farm, Hilton developed a love for hunting and fishing, but not for the long hours and hard work of farming. At the age of 10 years old, Hilton received a model airplane from his oldest brother and knew he wanted to be a pilot one day.
After graduating from Clinton High School, Hilton briefly attended the Air Force Academy and Methodist College, before graduating from Campbell University. During his college years, Hilton worked in maintenance at the Clinton Airport, got his instructor license at Raleigh/Durham Airport, and flew B-17s with his oldest brother fighting fires in NC, Idaho, and Alaska.
After undergraduate school, Hilton attended and graduated from Wake Forest Law School. He worked 3 years as an Assistant DA in the District Attorney Office in Wilmington, followed by 2 years in private practice. After practicing law, Hilton returned to his calling to be a pilot. He joined Piedmont Airlines, became a captain, and then retired from US Airways after 27 years of commercial flying.
During his early years with Piedmont Airlines, Hilton married Tory and became the father of Marshall, Addison, and Emily. Although flying was Hilton’s first love, his family was his true love. Hilton cherished playing golf and hunting with his sons and adored his daughter. He would often say that nothing brought him more joy than to receive a compliment regarding his children.
Hilton loved his family and loved his friends like family. Hilton never prayed for himself, but he prayed every night without fail for every family member (extended family included) and friend. This was no small task mind you. Over the years as the list of family and friends grew, Hilton would have to start his prayers well before bedtime in order to get everyone in before he fell asleep.
Hilton will be truly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall Thomas and Isabell Butler Newman, and his brothers Marshall Joseph and Edwin Carraway “E.C.”. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Tory, his three children, Marshall Newman and wife Ana, Addison Newman and wife Emma, and daughter Emily Newman. He is also survived by his sister Kitty, her husband Jay Parker, his granddaughter Isabell Newman, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Coble Funeral and Cremation Service at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 1155 Shipyard Blvd, Wilmington, North Carolina 28412. Following the reception there will be a get together in Hilton's honor at Pantana Bobs on College Road at 12:30pm.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.CobleGreenlawn.com for the Newman family.
