Ellen was known for her hospitality and humour, welcoming and appreciative nature, the raucous card games, her amazing chocolate cake, and many other fine attributes. Whoever met Ellen was drawn to her sparkling personality and easygoing charm. For that and so much more, she will be missed.
Ellen's parents, Robert and Ola, lovingly raised her in Sintaluta, Saskatchewan “where all the best people come from,” along with her sister Fran and her three brothers Raymond, Robbie and Jimmy.
As a young woman, she moved to Regina where she worked for Kraft Foods (explains all the Cheez Whiz). It was in Regina that Ellen met the love of her life, Oscar. He was the perfect match for her, and they shared many wonderful experiences. Oscar passed away almost 30 years ago, and not a day went by that she didn’t miss Oscar and yearn to have him by her side.
Ellen and Oscar chose to raise their children in the beautiful community of Lumsden. Oscar designed their house, but Ellen made it the most comfortable and loving home. It was her pride and joy! Their house in Lumsden and the cottage at Kenosee were meeting places where everyone felt welcome: friends, family, neighbours and children of all ages. The more the merrier!
Ellen loved to travel, visiting New York, Norway, Ireland, Morocco, and South Korea. She was especially fond of the trip with the extended family to Disney World and any opportunity to spend time with her grandchildren. As with most things, Ellen's focus was more on the people she spent time with and how she was forever enriched by their shared experiences.
Ellen mourned the passing of many loved ones over the years, especially her husband Oscar, but also her parents Bob and Ola and her siblings, Raymond, Robbie and his wife Shirley, as well as Fran’s husband Mel. Left to mourn are her children Michael (with Jill, Brynioch and Finnlee), Michelle (with Don and Anders), and Matthew (with Sara, Emily and Luke); her siblings: Raymond’s family (Eve, Shauna and Tim), Robbie and Shirley’s family (Wendy, Lori and Brad), Fran (with Tricia, Laura, and Jim), and her little brother Jim (with Gail, Patrick, Jimmy, and Susan) together with their extended families. She will forever be in our hearts.
After almost fifty years in Lumsden, Ellen found it very hard to leave her home. She eventually made the wise decision to move to Marion in Regina where she made many new friends, re-connected with old friends and was within walking distance of her sister Fran.
Eventually needing more support, she transitioned to Wintergreene, where she appreciated the sense of community and the enhanced opportunity to socialize with friends, both old and new. Regardless of the difficulties imposed over the last couple of years, Ellen made the best of the circumstances. Her children found ways to connect and spend time with her at every opportunity. Even as her health declined, her smile lit up the room when she received visitors.
She passed away peacefully on July 17, 2021 in Wintergreene. Friends and family were invited to join the service for Ellen in All Saints Immanuel Anglican Church, 142 Massey Road in Regina, Saskatchewan on Friday, July 23, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. with the Venerable Cheryl Toth officiating. Seating was limited for the service. A reception followed in the church yard. A private family interment took place in the Lumsden Cemetery. Ellen was a generous donor to many charities. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of your choice would be wonderful.
