History

Believing that a dignified burial should be available to everyone, William Winkenhofer founded Pine Ridge Memorial Park in 1982. He added Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home to the property in 1984. Since our inception, the residents of Cobb, Bartow and Cherokee counties have counted on our teams' expertise and compassionate care, and we are proud to continue the legacy our founder set forth.

A Kennesaw connection to the Civil War

Formerly known as “Big Shanty,” Kennesaw, Georgia, is steeped in history. The community was home to a prominent rail line in the early to mid-1800s, and Kennesaw played an important role in the Civil War.

The area laid claim to Camp McDonald, a Confederate soldier training camp established in 1861 that covered approximately 60 acres and was the largest military training facility in the state during the war. Located in present-day downtown Kennesaw, Camp McDonald is currently a historic park near the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History.

Additionally, Kennesaw was the site of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain on June 27, 1864. It was 1 of the fiercest battles of the Civil War's Atlanta Campaign and is now remembered at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.

Upholding a legacy

In 2006, Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home and Pine Ridge Memorial Park joined the Dignity Memorial® network, the largest network of funeral, cremation and cemetery providers in North America. As we grow and evolve, these sister locations remain committed to providing the same high level of personal and professional service that the people of Kennesaw and surrounding communities have come to expect.

Pine Ridge Memorial Park cemetery

In addition to seclusion and privacy, many sections of the cemetery have breathtaking views of Kennesaw Mountain, which is part of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.

Burial options and gardens

Our well-kept cemetery offers standard ground-burial options (with both flush-to-ground memorials and upright monuments), memorial and cremation benches, mausoleums, private family estates and other permanent memorialization choices.

The Garden of Honor at Pine Ridge Memorial Park is devoted to veterans and their families, and the Garden of Sacred Heart is our cremation garden that includes a variety of entombments.

Comprising several acres on a large hill, the Garden of Peace includes flat bronze markers, while our Garden of Eternity features upright monuments.

The Veterans Mausoleum is topped with a Civil War-era cannon, which is a nod to our area’s history and the role it played in that war.

The Last Supper Mausoleum features a granite version of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper painting, and our property includes a spacious chapel mausoleum that offers both indoor and outdoor crypts.

Supporting the community

The teams at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home and Pine Ridge Memorial Park are engaged members of the Kennesaw community, hosting funeral planning seminars and memorial events that are open to the public.

We invite the community to a candlelight memorial each holiday season that includes a video tribute to those we served during the year, and we host a sunrise service every Easter during which we release balloons and doves. In addition, we offer an annual Veterans Day and public servants appreciation event, as well as a Memorial Day service at the cemetery each May.

We also participate in programs such as the Homeless Veterans Burial Program, a cooperative effort with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; the Veterans of Foreign Wars; local medical examiners, coroners, veterans advocates and veterans organizations; as well as the We Honor Veterans Program, a collaborative effort of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and Department of Veterans Affairs; and the Partners in Education Program, through which we assist students at a local elementary school.
