Established in 1959, Raleigh Memorial Park sits atop one of the highest points in the city. It is the only cemetery in North Carolina designated as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.

Beautiful cemetery grounds

Cemetery grounds at Raleigh Memorial Park & Mitchell Funeral HomeSpanning 50 acres, the grounds of Raleigh Memorial Park are shaded by tall pines and towering oaks planted as saplings. Dogwood trees and cheerful crepe myrtles that become explosions of pink in spring provide a colorful counterpoint to the expanse of Bermuda grass. Canadian geese return to the cemetery every fall.

Garden burial options

Many of the gardens contain one-of-a-kind Italian marble statues, including the figure of Christ in the Christus Garden, which is among the larger religious statues in North America.

For above-ground entombment, Raleigh Memorial Park has two garden mausoleums in addition to the Chapel Mausoleum. The latter, beautifully decorated with stained glass, offers indoor and outdoor entombment, as well as a chapel for committal services.

Serenity Gardens, one of the cemetery’s newer areas, has space for estates or columbaria, as well as cremation niches. Another recent addition, Christus Estates, offers cremation niches in an exquisite natural setting.

The Garden of Memory veterans section at Raleigh Memorial Park features a bronze monument dedicated to members of the U.S. armed forces, as well as flags representing each branch of the military.

History

Cemetery grounds at Raleigh Memorial Park & Mitchell Funeral HomeIt’s hard to imagine a time when Glenwood Avenue was just a sleepy Carolina road connecting Raleigh and Durham. But decades ago, local military hero and Raleigh mayor Jyles Coggins had the foresight to build a cemetery that would meet the needs of a growing community.

In 1959, Raleigh Memorial Park opened. Later, Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park was built on property adjoining the cemetery—not only to offer families a convenient place to make funeral and cremation arrangements, but also to create a welcoming hospitality space for receptions and celebrations of life.

In 2006, Raleigh Memorial Park joined the Dignity Memorial network, the largest provider of funeral, cremation and cemetery services in North America.
