John was born in April of 1952 to John and Nettie Glena in Vernon, BC. As a boy, he spent a lot of time cooking and baking with his mother. He helped his father in the yard, and enjoyed exploring the outdoors. As a teen, John spent his summers helping his father build houses. John was known for his love of speed and thrills. He was a stunt downhill ski racer, high tower diver during summer regattas, motocross racer, and raced street cars on remote roads at night.
After graduation in 1971, John worked as a forest service ranger, married his first wife and childhood sweetheart Patricia, and they settled in Clearwater, BC. in 1977, John began his 29.5 year career with Edmonton Police Service, rising to the rank of Detective Sergeant. John was a dedicated and loving father to Aaron and Amy, and many happy family vacations and camping trips were had over the years. As his children grew up, it was evident they inherited his mighty work ethic. John absolutely adored his children, and was so very proud of them.
In 2000, he met his second wife, Joanne, and a beautiful friendship developed into a deep and loving relationship and marriage. In 2007, Joanne graduated from Depot as a newly minted Mountie, where John presented her with her badge. Joanne's was posted to Burnaby RCMP Detachment, and they relocated to Abbotsford, BC. In the 24 years they were together, they built a happy life, traveled, enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and adored their two Boston Terriers, Rascal and Roy. In 2014, John was so proud to hold his granddaughter, Lily, for the first time. He cradled her in his arms and sang her songs, and was so proud to watch her grow up into the fine young dancer she has become!
John spent the last 18 years volunteering with the Abbotsford Police Department Citizens Patrol and Speed Watch programs. John also volunteered with the BC Correction Services Citizens Advisory Committee for Matsqui and Kent prisons, and as the Provincial Chair.
In 2022, John bravely underwent radiation treatment for prostate cancer, with Joanne by his side through his cancer journey. Although his cancer was now at bay, his health declined. In April 2025, John and Joanne were heartbroken to have to say goodbye to their beloved Rascal (12) and Roy (10). John loved to cook, and in his final days, John and Joanne cooked up a recipe John made up spontaneously, a delicious pot of beans with ham and pineapple.
John is survived by his devoted wife and soulmate, Joanne; children Amy (Kevin) and Aaron (Allyson); granddaughters Lily and Madi; sister Janet; nieces Donna and Tammy; and the mother of his children and cherished lifelong friend, Patricia.
