Oyvind Haukas, 71, of Thompson, Manitoba passed away peacefully on January 29, 2024, surrounded by his family. Oyvind was born to Ludvik and Borghild Haukas on November 22, 1952 in Bergen, Norway, the youngest of ten. Oyvind grew up on the remote Haukås farm, and became a skilled carpenter. In 1974 Oyvind met Inger Marie, a match truly made in heaven. They were married in 1979. He accepted Jesus as His Savior New Years Eve 1979 at a small retreat on the West coast of Norway. Six months later at a house prayer meeting in Bergen, Norway, Oyvind received a clear call from God to serve the Indigenous people in Northern Manitoba. He and Inger served faithfully for 35 years and retired in December of 2019. They have continued to live in Thompson since. Oyvind enjoyed hiking, skiing, renovating and building, and a meticulously piled woodstack brought him great joy. At three in the morning, you’d find him restocking the wood-burning stove and praying. His roots in the hills of Norwegian farm-life, he had a humble, approachable way about him, but you couldn’t convince him otherwise if his mind was made up. Oyvind was one of the most peaceful men you would ever meet, and he loved their life in Canada. Oyvind and Inger had two children along with their spouses, Elise and Noah Braun and Andreas and Sally Haukas, and five grandchildren, Coen Braun, Evy Braun, Ander Braun, Espen Haukas and Piper Haukas. Oyvind was a loyal servant to God, loved his family with his whole heart, and boldly shared the love and warmth of our savior, Jesus Christ, to whom God called him. Oyvind has modeled what it means to love and live well and leave a legacy for generations. He will be deeply missed. We are looking forward to being reunited one day in Heaven.
“‘The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.’ And they shall rebuild the old ruins, They shall raise up the former desolations, And they shall repair the ruined cities, The desolations of many generations.”
Isaiah 61:1-4 NKJV
