Dick Hiebert was born in Didsbury, Alberta on Nov 8, 1949 to Allan and Elizabeth Hiebert. He was the oldest of five children. The family moved to Calgary where did Dick started school. In grade 1 he raised his hand to go to the bathroom and when given permission, ran all the way home, not realizing there was a bathroom in school. Grades 11 and 12 were spent at RJC, a Christian boarding school in Rosthern, Saskatchewan. He loved sports especially hockey and football and enjoyed going to Stampeder or Flames games in Calgary. He used to run to work in Calgary to stay in shape and also to keep ahead of dogs chasing him (he was afraid of dogs). He also loved singing and had a great tenor voice. He was the youngest singer in the Mendelssohn’s Choir which he had to audition for. At a service where the Hallelujah Chorus was being sung, he sat in the front row and sang it for memory along with the choir. He also enjoyed singing in the Foothills Men’s Choir in his church. Later on, he sang in the Singing Christmas Tree and had a role in the drama at Central Heights Church in BC. He loved vehicles. The first car he bought was a green Datsun which he kept immaculate. He bought a 1950 Chevy truck and restored it to the original. This was a huge passion of his and he took great pride in it.
After graduation he went on voluntary service at the Welcome Inn in Hamilton. When visiting Dick, his family saw him sporting a fur vest and fur sleeves on his legs (from a thrift store fur coat) and in sandals that he called Jesus boots. It was here that Dick used his mom’s recipe for tuna casserole with crushed potato chips and spooned ice cream over the whole thing and ate it with gusto!
He was baptized in 1971 and came back to Calgary to work with his dad at Calgary Millwork. In 1978 he became director of the Calgary Construction Association. When Calgary had the 1988 Winter Olympics, Calgary Millwork was awarded the contract to manufacture part of the Olympic Torch (the wooden handle). This really impacted him and he was so proud of it.
After moving to BC, Dick studied at Columbia Bible College receiving a counseling and caregiving diploma and became director of Caring Ministries at Central Heights Church. He was a great support and encouragement to the men who went through the Divorce Care program. He studied in Wako, Texas with Leadership Managements International and facilitated programs to enhance leadership skills for small businesses in Abbotsford. He also held a Life Line Christian Counseling card and officiated at 3 weddings.
Dick was a sponsor for M2W2, a ministry to empower and equip volunteers to build practical mentoring relationships with people affected by incarceration. He and his wife hosted 6 prisoners in their home at various times as they were rehabilitating.
Dick had a mischievous, fun-loving personality and was involved in many shenanigans. He loved laughter, food and interacting with people.
In February of 2018, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He passed into the presence of the Lord on December 10, 2021. Dick leaves 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He is predeceased by his father and mother and 1 grandchild.
