Dell Rennan Dawson, born December 25, 1954, went to be with the Lord on September 29, 2023 in Abilene, Texas at the age of 68. “Nan”, as she was known by her family and caregivers, was the eldest daughter of the late Dr. George and Dorthy Dawson. She is survived by her sister, Lyndy Edwards, and brothers Martin Dawson (Lucy) and Steve Dawson (Kay).
Nan was born in Dallas, Texas with special needs that led her parents to move to Abilene in 1958 so that Nan could receive physical therapy from the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. By the age of five, it became clear that Nan would require intensive, full-time care that could only be delivered in a professional healthcare environment suited to her specific needs.
As a result, she spent the next fifteen years in a private care facility near Bangs, Texas. In October 1974, at the age of 19, she became a resident at the Abilene State Supported Living Center, where she would live for the next 49 years. While her parents were always involved in Nan’s care, it was the love of the caring community at the Living Center that sustained her from day to day and made it possible for Nan to live a safe, healthy and happy life. The family is grateful for the many years of compassionate service, love, and support of the wonderful professionals and staff at the Living Center. They truly are God’s angels and healthcare heroes.
There will be a graveside service at Elmwood Memorial Park on Thursday, October 5th at 2:00pm. Nan will be laid to rest next to her parents – both of whom passed within the past 20 months. There will also be a celebration of Nan’s life later in October with the staff and residents of the Living Center. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the ABSSLC Volunteer Services Council for staff appreciation.
