Gerald Layton, 92, of Winters, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2025 in Winters. He was born on October 21, 1932 in Dublin, GA to the late William George Layton and Etholene May Layton. Mr. Layton retired from the United States Air Force in 1971 after serving in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was also an atomic veteran after having served during the atomic testing at the Marshall Islands. Mr. Layton was a Master Mason having become a member in 1968, and was a member of the Ballinger Masonic Lodge.
In his free time Gerald was an avid fisherman, often accompanied by his best friend Truman Adkisson. Their exploits will live on as legends. His other hobbies were gardening and fixing everything that could possibly break, from engines to kitchen chairs.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Layton; children, Tancy Kendrick, Marsha Adkisson, and husband Richard, Wilbur Layton II, and Marci; grandchildren, Roy and Cody Kendrick, Robert, Alan, Adam and Matthew Adkisson, Jackson and Harley Layton; 8 great grandchildren; brothers, Larry and Chester Layton.
Visitation will be 10:00 AM Friday, January 10, 2025 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home with a funeral service starting at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Roy Kendrick, Cody Kendrick, Matthew Adkisson, Jackson Layton, Robert Adkisson, Alan Adkisson, Adam Adkisson and Nathan Sarten.
