Dr. Glenn “Earle” McMillan, 80, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 14, 2013, in Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be 10:00am, Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Minter Lane Church of Christ with burial following in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory Street, Abilene. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5 to 7p.m. at the funeral home.
Earle was born in Oklahoma City, OK on March 8, 1933. He was the only child of James Wesley and Flo McMillan. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, EuAlice D. Davidson, and by his three sons and their wives; Mark and Diana, Brent and Kathleen, and Scott and Jennifer; along with eight grandchildren; Bryan, Kristen, Bethany, Brady, Leanna, Rachel, Casey and Andrea.
Earle grew up in Oklahoma City and came to Abilene to attend Abilene Christian College. It was at Abilene Christian where he met his wife, EuAlice. He eventually graduated from Abilene Christian with a B.A. and M.A in Bible and Greek. He left for Scotland in 1959 and obtained a Bachelor of Divinity degree from the University of Edinburgh, a fairly rigorous degree that is comparable to a PHD here in the states. While at the University of Edinburgh they gave birth to their first son Mark. Earle then returned to the states and taught at Abilene Christian for 3 years, during which time they had another son, Brent. In 1965 they once again decided to return to Scotland, this time to St. Andrews, where he got a PhD. While at St. Andrews they helped out with the local church there and had their third son, Scott. During his stays in Scotland Earle got interested in Antiques and returned many times over the years to shop. Earle and EuAlice even set up an Antique store here in Abilene that was open on the weekends. Upon returning from Scotland he taught Bible at Abilene Christian University for 10 years engaging students effectively to really think for themselves. He retired from teaching and started EDGE Gemco, a general construction business in Abilene. His oldest son, Mark, joined him in the mid ‘80s and EDGE Gemco became a successful business that is still run by Mark today. Continuing in the entrepreneurial spirit established by their father and older brother, Brent and Scott run their own businesses today as well.
Earle’s parents died at an early age and before any of his sons were born, thus Earle was very thankful for every year he got to see and be with his grandkids. As a teacher he made his students think, as a husband he stood by his wife, and as a father he was strong, loving, and treated his kids individually and exactly the way each needed. He will be missed very much. He’s in your hands God, take care of him.
