

Mrs. Mearse was preceded in death by husband, Eldon C. Mearse, her parents, Minnie and Walter Clements, and sister, Virginia Carter, and she is survived by her sons Bill and wife, Tanya, of Houston and Gary and wife, Salli, plus grandsons Mason and Matthew of Dallas; her brother, Walter “Buddy” Clements, and sisters Ruby Dressler and Joanne Priest.
Helen graduated from Snyder High School and was married to her husband, Eldon, for 33 years until his death in 1987. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother with an unwavering commitment to family. She actively supported her sons through volunteering for numerous school activities and programs and by attending baseball games and other sporting events for many years. She also enjoyed watching her grandsons at their school and games.
After her sons graduated from college, Helen sold home furnishings for Andrews Furniture and Montgomery Ward. She later learned the craft of basket weaving in New England and started selling and giving baskets to people across the Big Country. She also enjoyed presenting the history and art of basket weaving at numerous schools, civic organizations and craft shows highlighted by a featured article in the Abilene Reporter-News.
Helen was a long-time member of Southwest Park Baptist Church where she faithfully served her Savior, Jesus Christ. The family extends appreciation to the many people who supported Helen in recent years including the members of her monthly supper club, her neighborhood friends, Dr. Sandy Hazelip, the care givers of Home Instead, Cindy Karr of Primary Nurse Care and the staffs of Windcrest Care Center, Hendricks Medical Center and Sears Hospice.
Visitation is on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 US Highway 277 S, Abilene, TX 79606. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, February 22, at Southwest Park Baptist Church, 2901 South 20th Street, Abilene, TX 79605 immediately followed by a graveside service at Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 US Highway 277 S, Abilene, TX 79601. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Southwest Park Baptist Church.
