Janice was born on October 10, 1932 in Baird, TX to the late Calvin Horace McQueen and Evelyn (McCarty) McQueen. Janice married her high school sweetheart OB Spence May 15, 1952 and shared a loving life until his death October 2003. Four children were born to this union: Sam Spence, Jerry Spence, Jeanine Spence Horner and Don Spence. From that, 10 grandchildren and great-grandchildren have blessed her life.
Janice was a fashionable, fastidious and lively woman who never ceased to support the diverse interests of her family or to engage with her community. Throughout her life she was a stalwart spectator at her grandchildren’s sporting events, gave her time devotedly to her church, relaxed by playing dominoes with her friends, committed herself to civic causes, influenced Abilene’s development through her poised contribution to real estate, and lovingly brought her family together for plentiful meals and constant comfort and unconditional love. A woman of strong opinions and confidence, she was witty, warm and servant-hearted, often putting the needs of others before her own. Her practical wisdom, exceptional character, and congenial grace impacted everyone she knew. In her lifetime, she was also witness to many episodes of tragedy and hardship, which she met with a resolve and determination beyond imagining. Never one for self-pity or scorn, she relied on an inner tenacity and strength to bring well-being to those who depended on her, and always put her family and loved ones first. Janice will forever be missed, her memory eternally cherished, and the profound lessons in life and love she passed on, always remembered.
