An angel on earth filled with love, laughter and faith, James Michael Johnston (Jim) received his angel wings on December 19, 2017. His kind and giving spirit and unconditional love touched everyone he met. A man of great faith, he lived his beliefs.
Jim was born on July 23, 1953 in St. Louis, MO. to Mary Maxine and James Ivan Johnston. The family moved to Hillsboro, MO. in 1952 where he grew up and graduated from Hillsboro High School. Soon after, Jim entered into the United States Air Force. After returning from overseas, he was stationed at Dyess AFB. During his time in Abilene, Jim met and married his best friend and the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Watson on February 15, 1973. They have two children, Jimmy and Jamie.
Jim held degrees from McMurry University, Western Texas College, and OSU Executive Training Program. He began his 36 year career at American Electric Power in 1975 as a System Chemist in Power Generation and went on to become a Senior Environmental Specialist before moving to Plant Engineering as their principal Chemistry Coordinator. Jim was known as a trouble shooter who could determine the source of problems and devise solutions. Part of his job was to also design and build large water treatment plants in several states. Prior to his retirement with American Electric Power, Jim received numerous awards for his outstanding service. After his retirement he continued an extensive consulting practice. During his spare time he developed 22 commercial video games for various systems.
He is survived by his two children, Jimmy (Nikea) Johnston and Jamie Womack; five very precious grandchildren, Gunner and Gavin Johnston, Duke, Faith and London Womack; his mother Mary Owens and one very spoiled cat, Dexter 2, all of Abilene. Jim is also survived by his friends and extended AEP family that he shared so much joy with.
Jim was preceded in death by his beautiful precious wife, Elizabeth Ann Johnston who passed away from ALS; his father, James Ivan Johnston; and his grandparents, Daisy Johnston and Murriel Cook both of MO.
A celebration of his life will be held at Elliott-Hamil Chapel of Faith in Abilene on Hwy 277 Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 1pm.
Jim’s beautiful wife had battled ALS for many years, with grace and strength that could only come from GOD, she always refused to let her disease define or limit her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS association.
