

Joseph Houston Cannon, 87, passed away on Monday, August 25, 2014 in Abilene, TX. Graveside services will be 10:00a.m., Friday, August 29, 2014 in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South. The family will receive friends at a visitation Thursday evening, August 28, 2014 from 5:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. at the funeral home.
Joe was born in Idabel, Oklahoma on September 9, 1926 to Ernest Edward and Laura Opal Cannon. He grew up in Seminole and Lamesa, Texas where he graduated from Lamesa High School. Joe married Helen Leone Mathewson on February 11, 1950 in Lusk, Wyoming.
Joe and Helen moved to Abilene in 1955. They were members of Calvary Baptist Church. Joe retired from Mrs. Baird’s Bakery at the age of 65. He was a very caring husband, father, and grandfather. Joe was also a veteran of the United States Army. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupational Medal. Joe will always be in our hearts.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 59 years, Helen Leone Cannon; and his sister, Mary Cannon Weeden.
Survivors include his daughter, Cindy Sutton and husband, Rick of Abilene; two granddaughters, Kristin Sutton of Plano, TX and Meredith Sutton of Abilene; one brother, Charles Cannon and wife, Judy of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; one sister, Christine Cannon Norton of Odessa, TX; two nieces; and five nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hendrick Hospice and Wisteria Place for the excellent care given to their loved one.
