Lila was born on February 4, 1938; the seventh of ten children to the late James Milton Burk and Margrett Jennettie(Mitchell) Burk. She grew up on a farm outside of Roby, in Pledger Community, with her siblings. It was during these years their loving parents instilled values in them that they all carried throughout life as well as a special bond between each other. She graduated from Roby High School and went on to attend Draughns Business School in Abilene. She began a career with the City of Abilene as a bookkeeper. She married Jerry Vernon Snell on August 29, 1970, who she met in the singles department at First Baptist Church. Lila became a devoted homemaker, raising her two daughters. After the sudden passing of her husband, she began to volunteer with the Food Bank and was eventually offered a staff position. After retirement, she volunteered with Hendrick Medical Center.
Lila's faith was the foundation of her life beginning while growing up at the Pledger Baptist Church and continuing at First Baptist Church of Abilene. After marriage, she became a member of Southwest Park Baptist Church, where she and Jerry raised their daughters. Lila was a longtime member of the church’s hospitality committee. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother. However she especially loved her role as “Granny” to her cherished grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Jerry Vernon Snell; siblings, Frank Allen Burk, Erwin Milton Burk, Margrett Norene Kersh, James Delmar Burk, and Velma Jennettie Thomson.
She is survived by her daughters, Nicki Castillo (Randy) and Gloria Snell; three grandchildren, Peyten, Levi, and Garett Castillo; siblings, Louise Milliorn, Ila Burk, Wilma “Sam” Wilson, Lathum Burk (Linda); sister-in-law, Wilma Carman; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
