

Melvin Douglas Rogers, 90, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2013 in Abilene, TX. Funeral services will be 2:00p.m., Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Clyde Kieschnick officiating. Burial will follow in Potosi Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6 to 8p.m. at the funeral home.
Melvin was born on January 5, 1923 to Claude and Willie Graham Rogers in Buffalo, Texas. He attended school then served his country by joining the U.S. Army and participating in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
Melvin married Malinda Hopper in 1981 and was married for 31 years at the time of his death. He retired from Santa Fe Railroad as a conductor / switchman after 33 years of service. Melvin was a member of the VFW, UTU, as well as being a member of Zion Lutheran Church as a deacon, member of the Joy Group, and the trustee board. He was a huge Texas Ranger Baseball fan and loved all sports. Melvin was known to have a terrific sense of humor.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Alta Marie Murphy; and two brothers, Weldon A. Rogers and Lawrence Rogers.
Survivors include his wife, Malinda Rogers; two sons, Ronald Rogers and wife Jill, and Jimmie Rogers, all of Lubbock; step-daughters, Velma Williams of Colorado Springs, CO and Linda Phillips of Priddy, TX; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church Debt Reduction Fund, 2801 Antilley Rd., Abilene, TX 79606.
