On April 12, 1951, the Gutting household prepared for its fourth child with the birth of Peter Arnold in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Born to a navy family meant life on the move from coast to coast and two tours of duty in Hawaii. Being the youngest in the family until his sister Sarah was born in 1959, Peter was always the family favorite. So much so that his older sister by three years painted him green when he was two. In high school he participated in wrestling, track and field events and was the punter for the football team. While living in Virginia Beach, Peter enjoyed surfing and water sports. Peter excelled in math and physics and decided on a career as an architect, graduating from Auburn University in 1976. His excellence in design concepts won him the Paris Architect Award his senior year. Peter loved the west and lived and worked in Eagle, Colorado in his first years. He met and married a Vermont girl and moved to the Burlington area where they raised and showed Morgan horses. While there he designed the first Ben and Jerry Ice Cream Shop and several libraries. Peter was an independent architect and worked for various firms in St. Louis, Oregon and Boston. Some of his jobs took him to Jamaica and Kuala Lumpur. In his later years he lived his sister Ann (without paint) and traveled the western states, esp. Yellowstone National Park. He cared for her in her final stages of colon cancer. He spent his last eight with his brother Graham in Abilene, Texas enjoying road trips and local culture. He designed the latest addition to the Discovery Center honoring the 70th anniversary of the Nation of Israel in 2018. Peter loved Irish music and was one the Boston Red Sox Biggest fans. His love of life and humorous stories will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Captain John Philip Gutting, USN(Ret.) and Betty Jean(Morris) Gutting; his brother, John Philip Gutting, Jr.; and sister Ann Gutting maternal grandparents, Russell and Hilda Morris; paternal grandparents, Leo and Fanny Gutting.
He is survived by his brother, Graham Gutting and his wife Dinah of Abilene; sister, Sarah Sheehan and her husband Bill of Cape Code, Ma; sister-in-law, Sue Gutting of Maryland; nieces and nephews, Rani, Jeff, Elizabeth, Mark, Catherine and Brian; a host great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
