Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, John lived a life defined by courage, resilience, and quiet strength. He served seven years in the South African Military, including active duty during the South African Border War, and later worked with the Canine Unit, where his lifelong love of animals took root.
Despite his naturally introverted and humble nature, John built a successful career in management and sales within the steel industry. In 2006, he made one of the bravest decisions of his life - starting new in Canada with his wife and two children in search of a better future. The family settled in Georgetown, Ontario, where John later worked in the automotive industry and built a life grounded in dedication, perseverance, and love.
John had a deep passion for cars and motorcycles, finding peace and freedom on the open road. Riding his motorcycle was his “wind therapy,” a place where he felt most alive. That spirit of freedom and joy never left him.
John will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his generosity, his kindness, and his unwavering support for those he loved. He was strong and resilient in every sense of the word. Following his prostate cancer diagnosis in 2023, John faced his illness with remarkable bravery. He never allowed it to define him or diminish his joy for life, and continued to ride, travel back to South Africa, and live fully and on his own terms.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife of 35 years, Bitsy; his daughter, Claire; and his parents, Georgina and Philip Sr. He is survived by his son, Philip Jr, and his son-in-law, Michael, who will forever carry with them the impact John had on their lives.
A private family viewing will be held, followed by a Celebration of Life in the Spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in John’s memory. Donations and condolences can be made online at MacKinnonFamilyFuneralHome.com
