

Evelyn will be remembered by many for her compassion and willingness to help others. She was a devoted friend, a teacher, a leader, a world traveler, and to her family; a loving mother and “Bubee”.
Evelyn was a lifelong resident of Akron Ohio, born on July 3, 1925 to Ellen and Ivan Pencin. She was a proud graduate of Kenmore High School (1943), and went on to receive her Bachelors and Masters in Education and Administration from the University of Akron, where she was also a PhD candidate.
Evelyn was an Akron Public School Teacher, Reading Specialist, Curriculum Specialist, Supervisor of Teachers and at retirement, the Principal of Lawndale Elementary School. She also taught at the Tehran American School in Iran during the onset of that country’s revolution. From Iran, Evelyn taught a short time at the American School of Paris in St. Cloud, France. In retirement, she mentored and supervised Student teacher at The University of Akron and Kent State University as well as being a Test Administrator for both the U.S. and Ohio Departments of Education.
For her outstanding commitment to education, she was recognized with a Martha Holden Jennings Outstanding Teacher Award, a Service Key by Phi Delta Kappa International and she was honored by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Evelyn was a member of many organizations and served as President of Delta Kappa Gamm, Pi Lambda Theta, the Akron Chapter of the International Reading Association, and Phi Delta Kappa. She was a member of the
Women’s Committee of the University of Akron and a life member of SCRTA and ORTS.
Evelyn was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for 60 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher and a member of both the Archives and Art Committees. She was also instrumental in starting the church’s tutoring program. Throughout her life, she loved to travel with family and friends and belonged to the Cuyahoga Falls Travel Group as well as Firestone Park Primetime.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Ellen and Ivan Pencin, brother, Melvin Pencin, daughter Dyan Boli, and longtime companion Frank Holub. She will be forever missed and remembered by her family: son, John A. (Becky) Yovich of Palm Coast, Florida; granddaughter, Starr (Jim) Dobush of Ashland, Ohio; grandson Stephen (Carrie) Brightman of Aurora, Colorado; grandson, Michael (Marisa) Brightman of Denver, CO; great grandchildren: Addison and Declan of Aurora, CO; Elise, Miriam and Sonia of Denver, CO; Neven Dobush of Ashland, Ohio; and stepdaughter of the heart, Toni Ehrman of Medina, Ohio.

Please join us for a celebration of Evelyn’s life on Friday, July 31, 2026. The service will be held from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Rose Hill Funeral Home, located at 3653 West Market Street in Akron, Ohio. Following the service, a luncheon reception will take place at Papa Joe's Restaurant, located at 1562 Akron Peninsula Road, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
