

He received his early education in Woodville Public Schools. At an early age, he left school to take care of his mother and siblings. In 1943, Robert joined the US Army to serve his country. He served in WW II, touring Italy and Japan during his service. He received two bronze medals before his honorable discharge in 1946.
In 1959, Robert married the late Lillie “Flossie” Gilmore who preceded him in death in 1973. To this union, two children were born and reared; Diane and Robert III. He later married Estelle Spears in 1978. She had five children whom he loved as his own. Robert and Estelle spent 34 loving years together.
Robert was employed by Brown Derby and retired from Tangier’s in the 80’s where he worked as a head chef for over 30 years.
Robert was known to be a handy man to all his neighbors. He loved yard work and took great pride in the upkeep of his property. He also loved sports, and reading the newspapers. It wasn’t uncommon to find him at the kitchen table with a pencil in hand “figuring out stuff” while chewing on bubble gum.
His daughter, Diane took excellent care of him during his illness and throughout his last days, until his transition on May 1, 2017.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, wives, siblings, Ora Lee Ford, Eugene Willie Johns and Ernestine Stephens; two children, Leon Spears and Saundra Spears.
The memories of his life and legacy will be cherished by his devoted and loving children, Diane (Terrence) Johns, Robert “Bobby” Johns, Barry Spears (Brooksie), Valerie Spears and Andrea Peters; eight grandchildren, Leon Spears, Seth Spears, Angeline Spears, Cheniqua Terry (Abdullah), Tiffany Wright, Jamaal White and DarJuan “DJ” Johns; six great-grandchildren, Jaymie Spears, Johnnie Spears, Amari Spears, Sabriya Spears, Michaela Koger, DarJuan Johns Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
