

Ronald W Smitley was born in Akron, Ohio in 1939. He is a 1957 graduate of Akron Garfield High School and a proud graduate of the University of Akron, where he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. Upon his graduation from college, Ron commissioned as an officer in the United States Army, where he earned his jump wings as an Army paratrooper and the highly coveted green beret, the distinctive headgear worn by U.S. Army special forces. He served in the 6th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. After he completed his military service, Ron returned to school and earned his master's degree in counseling from Cleveland State University in 1977. He served as a licensed professional clinical counselor in multiple locations including New Mexico, New Hampshire, Ohio, and South Korea. Ron then went on to pursue and earn his Ph.D (doctoral degree) from Ohio University in 1991.
Ron meet Nancy Mieskoski while in college and they married in 1965. Together they raised three children, Kimberly, Jeffrey (Monica) and David. His departure leaves an unfillable void in thier lives, but they are comforted by the wonderful memories, love and unbreakable bond they share. From these children came five wonderful grandchildren; Victoria (Rhys), Michael (Alysha), Jennifer, Zachary, and Noah. A legacy any man would be proud of.
Ron always lived an active lifestyle. His interests included sailing, flying, biking, hiking, kayaking, camping, and reading. He always enjoyed the great outdoors and spending time with his family. He dedicated his life to helping others as he served many years as a military officer, educator, and counselor. He truly embodied the principles of a gentleman and a scholar.
