Robert was born on May 25, 1930, in Vanlue, Ohio, to Kenneth and Eva (Earley) Coldren. He graduated from Toledo Scott High School in 1948 and went on to earn a degree from the University of Toledo.
A proud veteran, Robert served his country as a Second Lieutenant in the 65th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division in the United States Army during the Korean War, alongside fellow officer Richard E. Cavazos. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat and two Silver Stars for his actions in June 1953, where he demonstrated extraordinary courage by advancing under heavy enemy fire, leading attacks, and remaining behind to protect his men as they retreated. He will be laid to rest with full military honors, a reflection of his courage and service.
Robert built a career working for Tilenius and Randolph, but the true measure of his life was found in the way he cared for others. He was a gentle, kind and thoughtful soul, always in good spirits, and someone who naturally showed an interest in others. He was especially devoted to his beloved wife, Elma Ruth Coldren, serving as her primary caregiver until her passing with deep compassion and selfless devotion.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elma Ruth Coldren; his sons Bill Howell and Mark Howell; his brother James Coldren; and his sister Nathalie Wisner.
He is survived by his daughter, Vicki Stormshak-Hood, son-in-law, Steve Hood, daughter-in-law Lois Howell; grandchildren, Michael Stormshak, Jeffrey Stormshak, Steve Howell, Sean Howell, Tim Howell, Allison Howell, Karen Marston, Bill Marston, Laurie Marston, Lisa Hood and Adam Hood; great-grandchildren, Everett Stormshak, Abiagael Lonergan, Braeden Lonergan, Noah Hood and Camyrn Hood; and his nieces, Karen Inbody, Barbara Epley, and Beverly Love.
Robert had a natural artistic talent and was truly an artist at heart. He loved watercolor, carving, drawing, and painting, and he found joy in the quiet focus of a chess game. He taught all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren how to play chess, passing along not just the rules, but patience and strategy. He also taught his nieces how to swim at the lake, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.
His favorite place to be was at home. Whether spending time with those he loved or caring for others, he lived a life rooted in kindness. If there is one thing people will remember most, it is how kind and happy he was.
He was known for saying “I love you more,” a simple phrase that perfectly captured the way he lived his life.
Robert also shared his home with beloved pets over the years, including his cats, Milford and Coach and dogs, Rocky and Missy.
Visitation and services will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 11am at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Dr., Albion, Michigan. Burial will follow at Cooks Prairie Cemetery in Homer, Michigan, where he will be laid to rest beside his beloved Elma Ruth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
