Bernie, "MIster Bernie" to my kids was a wonderful neighbor for more than 20 years.  Kind, quiet, and gentle, he was always fun to talk to and be around.  And a true American hero.

Dear Patty and family,
I came across Bernie's obituary in the Washington Times and it not only saddened me to some degree but also brought back many fond memories from our days together in Yokosuka, Japan.  If you recall I was the chapel pastor and was very fortunate and blessed to have you and the Admiral as part of the congregation at the Chapel of Hope.  We also had a little bit of a deeper connection because of our joint Southern Baptist roots.  Earlier I said I was saddened by Bernie's passing but that is tempered with joy and gratitude because of  the promise that is ours and yours because of Bernie's deep faith and love for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  This promise takes away the sting of death and reminds us of the living hope that is ours.  A promise that wipes away every tear and ensures that we will join him in Heaven one day.
