

The eldest of five siblings, Errol carried that role throughout his life with quiet strength and responsibility. He attended Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and later continued his education at the University of Washington. While enlisted in the United States Army, he completed Officer Candidate School and flight school, laying the foundation for a distinguished military career.
In January of 1966, Errol joined the United States Army on active duty. He served as a helicopter pilot and completed two tours in Vietnam, where his service was marked by courage, steadiness, and unwavering dedication. Over the course of his career, he served in various assignments, including overseas duty in Germany, where his youngest daughter, Erika, was born in Landstuhl. He ultimately attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and retired from the Pentagon, his final duty station. Following retirement, he was called back to service in support of Operation Desert Storm.
After his military service, Errol continued his professional career as a database engineer and systems analyst, holding positions with Boeing, SAIC, and later PEOIS, where he retired for a second time at the age of 70. He was widely respected for his intelligence, precision, and contributions to the early foundations of modern computing and networked systems.
Errol was preceded in death by his parents and by his siblings Marie Bergsagel and Louie Bergsagel.
He is survived by his loving wife, Penny Melgarejo; his children, Kari Alice Bergsagel, Ann Lois Bergsagel (from a previous marriage), and Erika Penny Bergsagel; his siblings Carl Bergsagel and Irene Bergsagel; and his grandchildren, Benjamin Glen McPherson (23), Cameron Erik McPherson (19), Aiden Dean McPherson (16), Stella Audrey Leach (15), and Scarlett Olivia Leach (13).
Known for his calm presence, gentle nature, and quiet strength, Errol led by example and left a lasting impression on all who knew him. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date. The family will share service details once arrangements are finalized.
